Book Covers of Note October 2018

Here are the book covers that caught my eye this month…

Beirut Hellfire Society by Rawi Hage; design by Lisa Jager (Knopf Canada / August 2018)

The Boatbuilder by Daniel Gumbiner; design by Sunra Thompson (McSweeney’s / May 2018)

This goes rather nicely with Sunra’s cover for the hardcover of All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews…

The Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke; design by Elizabeth H. Clark; illustration by Will Staehle (Farrar, Straus & Giroux / October 2018)

The Death Scene Artist by Andrew Wilmot; design by Michel Vrana (Wolsak & Wynn / October 2018)

I guess skulls aren’t going out of fashion any time soon!

‘Exterminate the Brutes’ by Sven Lindqvist; design by Luke Bird (Granta / October 2018)

One for the maps list

The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis; design by Pete Garceau (W. W. Norton / October 2018)

I feel like I should at least try to collect some of the best political covers from the past year or so together into a post at some point. On the other hand, I really don’t want to…

Gin: Distilled by Gin Foundry; design by James Paul Jones (Ebury Press / October 2018)

The Infinite Blacktop by Sara Gran; design by Alex Merto (Atria Books / September 2018)

Nervous States by William Davies; design by Suzanne Dean (Jonathan Cape / September 2018)

Red Birds by Mohammed Hanif; design by Greg Heinimann (Bloomsbury / October 2018)

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand; design by Aurora Parlagreco; illustration by Ruben Ireland (Katherine Tegen Books / October 2018)

Something Great and Beautiful by Enrico Pellegrini; design by Gray318 (Other Press / September 2018)

I’m not entirely sure why, but cover of Something Great and Beautiful brought to mind the 2014 cover of the UK edition of The Empathy Exams by Leslie Jamison, designed by Tom Darracott for Granta. They’re really not that similar, and yet…

Son of Amity by Peter Nathaniel Malae; design by David Drummond (Oregon State University Press / October 2018)

Statistics Without Tears by Derek Rowntree; design by Matthew Young (Penguin / June 2018)

There Will Be No Miracles Here by Casey Gerald; design by Grace Han (Riverhead Books / October 2018)

Are black and white stripes / op art having a moment in New York?

Both these covers reminded me of Riverhead art director Helen Yentus’s black and white cover for The Stranger by Albert Camus:

Wasted Calories and Ruined Nights by Jay Rayner; design by Dan Mogford (Faber & Faber / October 2018)

Notable YA Covers of 2017

So here it is, Merry Xmas, everybody’s having fun, my YA (and middle-grade) covers round-up for 2017. This is far from my area of expertise (I mostly work on the adult trade side of things), but until someone else steps up to do a annual post on YA covers with design credits and publisher details you’re stuck with me. Sorry.

All the picks are, of course, mine, but thank you to all the designers who have helped me over the year with covers, suggestions, and credits, and special thanks to Erin Fitzsimmons at HarperCollins and Sarah Creech at Simon & Schuster who helped me with this post in particular. Happy holidays!

Book Covers of Note February 2017

A little later than usual — between one thing and the apocalypse — but there are some great covers out this month, including at least one contender for cover of the year:

The Bear and the Serpent by Adrian Tschaikovsky; design by Neil Lang (Pan Macmillan / February 2017)

The cover for the previous book in the series, The Tiger and the Wolf, was also designed by Neil:

Birds Art Life Death by Kyo Maclear; design by Jonny Pelham; illustration by Kyo Maclear (Fourth Estate / February 2017)

The cover of the US edition published by Scribner, which also features illustrations by Kyo Maclear, was designed by Lauren Peters-Collaer:

The Blot by Jonathan Lethem; design by Gray318 (Jonathan Cape / February 2017)

The Brand New Catastrophe by Mike Scalise; design by Oliver Munday (Sarabande Books / January 2017)

Civil Wars by David Armitage; design by Peter Mendelsund (Yale University Press / February 2017)

Darke by Rick Gekoski; design by Pete Adlington (Canongate Press / February 2017)

Emergency Admissions by Kit Wharton; design by Jonny Pelham (Fourth Estate / February 2017)

Is That Kafka? by Reiner Stach; design by Erik Carter (New Directions / February 2017)

Erik’s design for the hardcover was included in my June post last year:

Never Enough by Barney Hoskyns; design by Jamie Keenan (Constable / January 2017)

Nicotine by Nell Zink; design by Julian Humphries (Fourth Estate / October 2016)

Had I seen this cover last year when the book was published, it would undoubtedly made my end of the year list.

And on the topic of covers of the year, here’s that early contender for 2017:

A Separation by Katie Kitamura; design by Jaya Miceli (Riverhead / February 2017)

And from the sublime to the hilarious…

Spurt by Chris Miles; design by Lucy Ruth Cummins (Simon & Schuster / February 2017)

A Simple Story by Leila Guerriero; design by Oliver Munday (New Directions / February 2017)

This is the Ritual by Rob Doyle; design by Greg Heinimann (Bloomsbury / January 2017)

Greg’s design for the hardcover of This Is The Ritual, also published by Bloomsbury, was included in my January post last year:

Notable YA Book Covers of 2016

Hot on the heels of my annual covers post, here is my look back at the year’s young adult book covers. As in previous years, this list is a somewhat crowd-sourced affair, so I must thank all the designers and Twitter-folk who made suggestions and helped in various others ways. I’ve tried my best to credit the designs as fully as possible, but please let me know if there are any errors or omissions.

52 YA Covers for 2015

As my 2014 post was such a hit, here is my second annual look at the past year’s young adult book covers. This isn’t my speciality, so this list is a lot more of a crowd-sourced effort than my very personal adult list. A special thank you to all the designers who have made suggestions in the past couple of weeks  — you know who you are! — and if there are any burning omissions, please let me know in the comments!

Although this is really a variant to the cover of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han (on last year’s list), I still think it works really well.

Book Covers of Note March 2015

Here is March’s selection of new and noteworthy covers. It’s a little bit of the Merto and Mendelsund show I’ll admit, but I assure you there really are some brilliant covers by other designers this month too!
