Flip It Back

The always dependable Fresh Signals alerted me to this French video for a new horizontal book format:

This is apparently the “flipback” format that had The Guardian so hot under the collar a few weeks ago. Please feel free to drop me a line or leave a comment if you have more details about it.

  1. still the same essential, beautiful thing we can all rely on and hold, and cherish. Great take.

The original (Dutch) version of this concept dates from 2009. Here is a website that has more info — all in Dutch, I’m afraid:

The books are made by Jongbloed, a printing house that specializes in bible printing (on 45 gr/sm paper). The books are not just flipped, they are also bound in a special way to facilitate the horizontal reading.

  3. I’ve seen a few recently while working in-house for a British publishers (one using the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy cover I designed), they are a really interesting idea and fit comfortably in your pocket.

I wasn’t sure whether I liked the concept when I first heard about them, but after holding one and having a flip through it felt natural. Best of all, they require front and back covers – so my job is looking good for another couple of years at least.
