The Casual Optimist is a blog about books, book design, book culture and publishing.
I grew up surrounded by books.
To borrow a line from Diane Athill’s wonderful memoir Stet: An Editor’s Life, “everywhere we looked there were books… they were piled on tables and chairs, as well as on shelves”. The only thing I’d add is that we had books piled on the floor as well. We still do… Needless to say, I work in the book business.
After years of working in bookstores, and a stint at an independent publisher, I’m currently the publicity and marketing manager at PGC Books, an independent book distribution company based in Toronto, Canada. The Casual Optimist is a personal project. The opinions expressed here are my own.
